We'll try to keep the noise down

From the archive, first published Monday 19th Sep 2005.

RAF FAIRFORD say they will do their best to reduce noise as planes from Brize Norton are moved to the base.

The first of 28 tanker and transport aircraft from the Oxfordshire base have started to fly to the American airbase north of Swindon where they will be based until January.

Wing Commander Mark Baker, senior operations officer, said the airbase will ensure as little noise as possible is made during the move.

He also said the base will do its best to not disrupt locals.

Because of the operational commitments to Iraq, Afghanistan and the Balkans, he said it was inevitable that some noise would affect locals.

This would occasionally occur during the quiet hours.

Traffic noise around the area was likely to increase as passengers and freight moved to and from Fairford.

The aircraft move is due to runway resurfacing at Brize Norton.

There will be 28 RAF transport and tanker aircraft operating from Fairford including TriStars, VC-10s and C17s. Aircraft chartered by the MOD will also use Fairford.
