Healing power of art helps mum

From the archive, first published Friday 14th Oct 2005.

ARTIST Marie Edwards is still putting her life back together after her daughter died in a hospital scandal more than 10 years ago.

Miss Edwards, 37, from Melksham, was devastated when her five-month-old daughter Jazmine died in 1993 after heart surgery at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. To help her through the pain she has put together a collection of her abstract paintings and is appealing for a gallery to take her work on as sole exhibitor.

She said: "I have had very positive feedback about the paintings.

"It has been a long struggle but to put all my feelings into my artwork is a tremendous help."

The Bristol scandal was discovered in 1998, when doctors realised the death rate among children undergoing heart surgery at the hospital was double the national average.
