Ghosthunters draw blank at The Clifton

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Monday 7th Mar 2005.

MOST would expect a decent array of spirits at a pub. But not one was on show when ghosthunters held an overnight vigil at The Clifton Inn in Clifton Street on Saturday.

The Paranormal Site Investigators arrived at the Old Town boozer with the latest audio and visual recording equipment.

Landlady, Mel Johnson, said she thought the team led by Dave Wood would have had a chance of detecting something given the age of the pub. The watering hole built in 1878 was built on the remains of an ancient priory.

She said: "We didn't spot any nuns. We did hear a few unexplained bangs but you get that in old buildings."

Mr Wood added: "The Clifton Inn has never been investigated before and we were fortunate to be allowed in. Considering the history of the venue, there may well be other spirits prevalent within the building."
