Plea to back post office

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Thursday 2nd Sep 2004.

The campaign to save Pewsham Post Office from closure is set to win the backing of North Wiltshire District Council.

Post Office Ltd has launched a review of its 9,000-strong network with the aim of closing about 3,000 branches in a bid to stem losses. The review aims to create a sustainable and viable structure and, as part of it, has proposed closing the Pewsham Forest branch in Lodge Road, Chippenham.

As part of its consultation process the Post Office has asked for the views of the district council and on Thursday members of the executive committee will decide how to respond.

A report recommends members urge the Post Office to keep the branch open saying it provides a vital service for residents who may have problems accessing the main post office in the town centre.

The district council report says the Pewsham Forest Post Office carries out low levels of business for an urban branch and research shows many customers already use the town centre post office when they do their shopping.

Public consultation will end on September 27.
