Festival for town's youth

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Thursday 2nd Sep 2004.

GAZETTE & HERALD: YOUNG people in Calne will have the opportunity to see what facilities are in their town, and it is partly thanks to a bike ride.

North Wiltshire District Council's partnership anti-social behaviour reduction officer Pete Hill, 35, cycled 1,135 miles from Lands End to John O' Groats to raise money for the youth festival to be held on September 11.

Mr Hill, from Chippenham, raised around £300 for the event and said that he enjoyed seeing the countryside.

He said: "I got there is 18 days, I travelled 1,135 miles and I got one puncture.

"I cycled 84 miles in the last day and I saw lots of different things you probably wouldn't see in a car journey like red squirrels and deer in the road.

"I had six days of rain, too. I found cycling in the rain was hard work because the boots got full with water in an hour and a half in the storms.

"It was never intended to be a sponsored journey but I did put up a sponsorship form because of this youth festival."

Calne Mayor Carol O'Gorman, who is organising the event, explained that the money would be of great benefit to the festival.

"It's paying for the Wigglybus to bring in and take home the young people and their parents from the villages around Calne and take the people to the recreation ground for the sports activities.

"He's also putting it towards the stilt walker or spraying painter."

Coun O'Gorman said that the festival would provide young people with a chance to see what the town offers them.

"It's an opportunity to let the young people decide what they want in Calne for opportunities and facilities," she said. "We are going to do some more consultation papers.

"On the consultation, we have asked the young people what they think of the facilities here, what facilities would they use if they were in Calne, what other opportunities they would like to see in Calne and finally would they be interested in having a place in the town they can call their own."
