Super soup for homeless

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Thursday 2nd Sep 2004.

GAZETTE & HERALD: THERE is no such thing as too many cooks spoil the broth when it comes to making soup for the homeless, and the Salvation Army know this.

So when HJ Heinz donated almost 40 cases of tinned soup to the Chippenham centre, helpers were extremely pleased.

Heinz has changed the logo on its tinned soup and re-launched the product with new labels.

As part of the re-marketing scheme supermarkets across the country are ridding their shelves of cans with the old label and giving them to the Salvation Army to distribute to homeless people.

On Tuesday Captain Mary Wolfe of the Salvation Army in Chippenham collected many varieties of soup from Morrisons superstore in West Cepen Way.

She said: "We're very delighted to have all this. It means a lot. We will give them out to homeless people and people in need and also use them for food parcels. We get families or people who are struggling with young children come to us asking if we can help them with food so some will go towards that. All Heinz cans have got ring pulls which is very important because homeless people don't have tin openers."
