GAZETTE & HERALD: SHOWERS couldn't spoil the delicious sense of fun at this year's Castle Combe Lardy Cake Fayre.
The bi-annual event brought in the crowds to the picture postcard village on Bank Holiday Monday, where they enjoyed the many attractions on offer, along with some delightful cakes.
"We had a change of management in the middle of the preparations for this fayre and of course the weather wasn't too great, but we were thrilled with how well it actually went," said Adrian Bishop, chairman of Castle Combe Parish Council.
The idea behind the lardy cake fayre came from the delicious cakes once cooked in Castle Combe's Hurley's Bakery.
And the focus of the fayre proved such a hit, that they sold out completely by 2.30pm.
But there were plenty of other cakes to enjoy and visitors also flocked to sample cream teas in the village hall.
Other attractions included visitors from Bristol Zoo, who captivated the imagination of many of the young visitors with a collection of weird and wonderful creatures, including giant cockroaches, stick insects and a tarantula.
And the youngsters also took part in the popular duck race, floating their plastic ducks under the village bridge and racing them along the stream.
"We were very pleased by the large number of people who came along to the fayre," said Mr Bishop.
"There were lots of stalls, including books and gifts, plants and more cakes.
"The village was closed-off for the event and a farmer kindly loaned us the use of his field for extra parking.
"A continental organ provided some lovely music and we were counting the money raised until well into the evening."
Funds raised by the Lardy Cake Fayre this year will be split between the village church's restoration fund, the Chernobyl Children's Fund, the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and the village museum.
"People love coming along and we take great enjoyment from organising the fayre," said Mr Bishop.
"My wife bought me a piece of lardy cake and I managed to eat half of it before things got too busy!
"I would like to say a huge thank-you to all the people who made it such a success."
