Goatacre v Warminster

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 6th Aug 2004.

GOATACRE are in real danger of relegation after their understrength side fell to a 27-run defeat to third-placed Warminster.

With five regulars missing, stand-in captain Sam Parish won the toss and asked Warminster to bat first, which looked a good decision when Fabian was caught by John Wilkins off the bowling of Adam Iles in the first over.

With Rahn Heer bowling an excellent spell at the other end, runs were hard to come by and with Kevin Iles claiming a wicket in his first over, Warminster were struggling.

But good batting by Maxwell and Coxon-Tenty saw them through this sticky patch and the partnership blossomed as the ball became softer.

Heer bowled well without any luck, his 15 overs only bringing around 3 runs an over, but with Maxwell being badly dropped on 47 and going on to make 82 and Coxon-Tenty making 64, Warminster reached 180 for 2 with 13 overs in hand.

Not for the first time this season Goatacre kept battling and were rewarded with four wickets from Adam Iles and three from Robert Turner, along with a run out by Matt Wilkins as Warminster crept to 227.

In reply Goatacre were given a sound start by Steve Gee and Robert Turner and they took the score to 50 before Gee was well caught off Keenan for 35.

With Turner falling lbw to Coxon-Tenty for 30 and Matt Wilkins being caught off the same bowler for 14, Goatacre began to fall behind the asking rate. Kevin Iles battled hard to make 30 but with Coxon-Tenty completing a fine match with 4-30 from 15 overs, the situation became more difficult.

A few lusty blows by Parish and sensible batting at the end by Heer and Miller took Goatacre to 200 and another batting point, but the next game at Trowbridge is now crucial after three defeats in a row for Goatacre.
