Royal charter sought by PR professionals

From the Amesbury Journal, first published Thursday 5th Aug 2004.

MEMBERS of the Institute of Public Relations, which has more than 300 members in the Wessex region, have given the go-ahead to petition the Queen for a royal charter.

Matthew McKenna, chairman of the IPR Wessex Group and managing director of McKenna Townsend PR in Ringwood, said: "Achieving chartered status for the IPR will give our members the recognition they deserve as dedicated communications professionals.

"The PR industry in the region is thriving and a royal charter will give our members a stronger voice at all levels, raise standards across the industry by clearly differentiating between qualified and unqualified practitioners and strengthen the emphasis on continuous professional development and ethical practice."

He said that if the institute's proposals are accepted by the Privy Council, it would be "formal recognition that the public relations profession has matured and that the IPR is carrying out its role as a professional body to the highest standards".
