Awards victory for Journal team

STAFF at Salisbury Newspapers scooped some of the top honours at the first-ever Newsquest South West editorial and newspaper sales awards on Friday night.

They left with no fewer than seven awards, beating off stiff competition from reporters, photographers, sub-editors and sales staff based at Newsquest titles in Andover, Basingstoke, Somerset and Cornwall.

Lesley Bates looked completely taken aback when her name was read out for Feature Writer of the Year.

Sub-editor Melissa Terry was also surprised to be crowned Designer of the Year, Special Publications.

Elsewhere, Sarah MacQuillen and Gaetana Prassede both left with certificates of commendation.

Sarah was highly commended for her sports reporting, while Gaetana received one as a trainee reporter.

Staff members also took to the stage to collect awards for some of Salisbury Newspapers' titles.

The circulation team pick up their award.Kate Reeves, Hayley West and deputy news-editor Roland Batten collected the circulation award after the Forest Journal was singled out for the best year-on-year performance in 2003, with a dramatic 11 per cent rise in circulation.

Russell Joyce picked up a highly commended certificate for the website www.thisissalisbury.

And, finally, Gaetana returned to the stage to collect the trophy for the best campaign, A Place to Call Home, which she has spearheaded and which has featured in the Salisbury Journal over the past few months.
