Big-hearted bikers help out

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Thursday 5th Aug 2004.

GAZETTE & HERALD: THEY may love speed and the thrill of big engines, but bikers with a love of animals took to their machines to deliver much needed food to an animal sanctuary last Sunday.

Around 60 members of the Mid Wiltshire Motorcycle Action Group met up at the Lysley Arms in Derry Hill at 1pm, before travelling in convoy to the Wiltshire Wildlife Sanctuary in Newton Tony near Salisbury.

MAG member, Alan Jones, of School Walk, Chippenham, said: "The MAG campaigns for motorcyclists' rights, but we also like to help out with charities and this summer we agreed to do what we could for the animal sanctuary.

"The volunteers who run it are currently trying to move to better premises and need all the help they can get. All the bikers turned up carrying either bird seed or other food for the animals and we also had a collection which raised £100 for the sanctuary.

"A lot of the bikers had a look around the sanctuary at the animals before we all came back again."

Mr Jones said it wasn't unusual to see bikers doing their bit for good causes.

"It's strange really, but when we arrange these types of things it's usually the big looking bikers who turn out to help they're big-hearted people."

The group meets once a week on a Thursday night and anyone interested in going along should contact Paul McCullagh on (01249) 447310.

The Sanctuary, which cares for injured, wild animals ranging from rooks and magpies to hedgehogs, is currently looking for volunteers to help work on the new premises. Contact the sanctuary on (01980) 629470.
