Stealth Bombers coming

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 21st Dec 2004.

AMERICAN Stealth bombers could soon be a familiar sight in Wiltshire's skies. Two new, special climate controlled hangars have been dedicated at RAF Fairford, allowing the billion-dollar bombers to be maintained and operated from there.

Basing the bombers at Fairford will save 16 hours flight time when it comes to reaching targets across the Atlantic from the aircraft's normal base in Missouri.

The hangars, which are 50,000sq ft in size, cost almost 20 million dollars to build.

They will allow maintenance on the Stealth bomber's "low observable" stealthy skin which stops it being detected by radar.

The Stealth bomber, which is also known as the B2 Spirit, has visited the base on several occasions, mainly to take part in the Royal International Air Tattoo which is held at RAF Fairford every year.
