Barracks renamed after hero

HULLAVINGTON Barracks, near Chippenham, is to be renamed Buckley Barracks in recognition of the 10th anniversary of the Royal Logistics Corps.
The 9 Supply Regiment of the Royal Logistics Corps, which has occupied the barracks for 10 years, will hold a brief ceremonial parade tomorrow to commemorate the occasion.
Members of the regiment will shortly depart for Iraq, to relieve troops currently occupying the country in the wake of the successful coalition invasion. They will march out of the barracks and then back to their newly-renamed headquarters.
The barracks will be named after Conductor John Buckley, Commissionary of Ordnance in the Bengal Ordnance Department. During the Indian Mutiny of 1857 he and a number of others defended the Delhi Magazine despite being vastly outnumbered.
Rather than let the ammunition fall into enemy hands, Buckley and his comrades decided to blow up the building and themselves with it.
Four of them survived, including Buckley, who went on to play a pivotal role during the remainder of the mutiny.
