From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 4th Feb 2003.
LOCAL government minister Nick Raynsford has urged people living in Swindon to have their say on whether they want a referendum on a directly elected regional assembly.
Residents have until March 3 to air their views on elected regional assemblies, which, according to Mr Raynsford, would give people a distinct political voice and real say over discussions that matter to them.
Since December last year the Government has been exploring the level of interest in each English region outside the capital with levels of interest being used to decide which ones should vote first.
Mr Raynsford said: "Over the past two months we have received responses from all over the country following the launch of the soundings exercise."
