Anti-war protesters out to gather more support for rally

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 4th Feb 2003.

Anti-war protesters are to meet in Swindon to gather support ahead of a national peace rally.

Swindon Stop the War Coalition is organising a mass leafleting and street meeting on Saturday to protest against war on Iraq. They will be handing out leaflets by the Lion statue at the corner of Canal Walk and Regent Street between 11am and 1pm.

Organiser Andy Newman said: "Last week's opinion poll in the Adver showing 88 per cent of Swindon people were against the war was a tremendous boost for us.

"We want to build on that by getting the biggest possible turnout from Swindon on the London demonstration. We had a stall there last Saturday with our banner and did a street meeting and sold 17 coach tickets in two hours.

"The street meeting was an excellent way of provoking debate." Swindon's Stop the War Coalition is organising transport to the national demonstration in London on Saturday, February 15. Call 520903 for details.
