From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 4th Feb 2003.
At the start of the European Year of Disabled People, the Mental After Care Associ-ation is calling for greater incentives to be offered to people with mental health problems to move from benefits into employment.
Many people with mental health problems want to work, but they can be seriously worried about losing the security of benefits, and can feel under pressure to take a job they may not want. There is still regrettably a great deal of misunderstanding about mental health issues among employers.
Changes that would help matters include:
n A flexible benefits system that recognised that people with mental health problems can experience significant fluctuations in their capacity
n Job Centres to give more time and resources to clients with mental health problems with an increase in the numbers and training of disability employment advisers
n Renewed efforts to tackle employers' doubts about the productivity of staff with mental health needs
Let's make 2003 a year in which those with mental health needs are better supported in getting back into employment.
