Getting plastered is a spectator sport

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 25th Jun 2002.

AN art student was planning to get plastered tonight all in the name of art.

Martin White will be covering a student volunteer from head-to-foot in plaster as part of Think Arts Week.

It is all to demonstrate his method of making life casts that are later filled with concrete and stood in a row to create a sculpture exhibition of people of all shapes and sizes.

Barbara Dixon, visual arts officer from the council's Artscape will be there to discuss Martin's work.

She said: "This promises to be a memorable occasion.

"It's not every day you see someone encased in plaster."

His exhibition of Standing Figures shown at Lydiard Park at the end of May ranged from a 11-year-old girl through to a 59-year-old man and a pregnant woman.

Unfortunately, vandals targeted the casts just 24-hours after they were unveiled and Swindon Council decided to pull down the statues for fear of further attacks.

The free demonstration will take place tonight from 7pm to 8pm at the Stable Block in Lydiard Park. Visitors should approach the park by the Hook Lane entrance.
