Shop manager makes a stand

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Thursday 7th Mar 2002.

HEALTH food shop manager Christopher Markham has told Devizes MP Michael Ancram and Euro MP Caroline Jackson he is delighted that they are opposing proposed new EC regulations that would hit his Marlborough business significantly.

The rest of the EC is due to be brought in line with Germany, where about 300 health food products currently on sale over the counter in the UK can only be obtained from pharmacists.

Vitamin supplements would only be available from pharmacists if the changes are passed in Brussels.

On Friday, the MP and MEP went to Wild Thyme in Hughenden Yard, where Mr Markham told them the proposed regulations would have a drastic effect on his trade.

Mr Markham, who is about to buy the business, said: "We have a right to sell these products and we should stand up for it."

Mrs Jackson spent the morning touring the town with the MP. She said Germans had "a paranoia" about the kind of medicines which can be bought freely without prescription.

Mr Ancram said the Conservative shadow health spokesman, Liam Fox, had approached the Government asking which products would be affected and if Britain would be opposing the move.
