WRECKERS are thwarting attempts by the parks department of Salisbury district council to encourage new tree growth on Harnham Slope.
Hundreds of indigenous trees, including ashes and sycamores, have been planted on top of the slope as part of an enhancement project the council has been carrying out at the 30-acre site over the past three years.
But between 30 and 40 of the saplings have been deliberately snapped off and the council is now urging Harnham residents and other people who use the Bishops Walk footpath across the top of the slope to help them track down the culprits.
"The damage being done to these trees is sheer mindless vandalism and we need help in finding the people responsible and taking court action against them," said senior parks officer Andy Cole.
"These vandals are damaging the environment, not just for now but for future generations, and we are determined to stop them."
Harnham Slope, with its dramatic views of the cathedral, the city, Old Sarum and Laverstock Down, has had numerous facelifts after falling into neglect at various stages in the past 50 years.
