Runner to put race on marks

From the Gazette & Herald, first published Thursday 7th Mar 2002.

CALNE'S veteran long distance and marathon runner Ken Shaw will officially start the Rotary Club's annual fun run around the Bowood Estate next week.

The six-mile run, which always raises several hundred pounds for charity, takes place on Sunday, March 17 and is open to keen runners, beginners and even walkers.

This year all sponsorship money is being donated to the Macmillan Nurses Appeal and the Gazette and Herald will be entering its own team.

Mr Shaw, of Braemor Road, said he has run in more races than he cares to remember, including the Rotary run on several occasions. But the pensioner says he has now hung up his running shoes for good.

The race starts at Calne's White Horse Leisure Centre at 11am, when Mr Shaw will drop the flag.

Less enthusiastic runners, who choose to take in the surroundings and walk the route for fun, will start five minutes later.

Booking in will start at the leisure centre from 10.30am.

Sponsorship forms are available from many Calne shops, or by contacting race organiser Cliff Thomas on (01249) 653250.
