'I'd trust her with my children'

From the Amesbury Journal, first published Thursday 21st Mar 2002.

A CLOSE friend of the Cannings family told Winchester Crown Court that he often left his own children in the care of Angela Cannings and would not hesitate to do so again.

Terry Chambers, who worked with the Canningses at Tesco, in Salisbury, said: "Angela was a totally loving mother. I have no reservations about her whatsoever."

Mr Chambers was the first person Terry Cannings called for support when baby Matthew was rushed to hospital on the day of his death.

Close to tears, Mr Chambers said: "Terry called me at home and said it had happened again. He wanted me. I got straight into the car and drove to the hospital.

"I introduced myself as Terry's brother because I thought that the hospital wouldn't let a non-relative get to him and I knew that he wanted me.

"I was comforting Terry when he told me that Matthew needed to be taken to the Chapel of Rest but they were having great difficulty in geting Angela to agree to it.

"She was in another room with Matthew and was refusing to come out. Terry wanted me to go in and speak to her and tell her it was time to let him go.

"I went into the room and she was sitting on the bed holding Matthew, with her head very close to his. She was crying uncontrollably.

"It wasn't until I sat down on the bed next to her that she even realised I was there.

"I was with her for about 20 minutes, trying to comfort her. She buried her head in my shoulder and just cried and cried.

"Then she looked up at me and said, `Terry, what am I doing wrong?'

"I looked back at her and said, `You are doing nothing wrong. It is just nature.' "

Angela Cannings denies the murder of her two sons Jason and Matthew. Case proceeding.
