Councillors in line for `pay' rises
From the Amesbury Journal, first published Thursday 28th Feb 2002.
SALISBURY District councillors are in line for huge "pay" increases after approving the recommendations of an independent review panel on members' allowances.
The remuneration panel, set up as part of a countrywide bid by the government to more adequately reimburse councillors for their growing workload and attract a greater cross-section of people to seek election to local authorities, has come up with a package that will give:
a basic allowance of £4,000 - compared with the present £2,500 a year - to all members of the council;
an allowance of £16,000 a year for the council leader, who is currently receiving £5,000;
a payment of £12,000 for the deputy leader and all cabinet portfolio holders;
£8,000 a year for other cabinet members and area committee chairmen and overview and scrutiny panel chairmen;
£500 a year on top of their other allowances for party group leaders, with an extra £100 per member for leaders of groups of more than five members;
£250 for deputy group leaders and an extra £50 a year for those with more than five members;
£2,000 a year for the chairman of the council and £650 for the vice-chairman;
£1,000 a year for vice-chairmen of committees and overview and scrutiny panels;
£500 a year for chairmen of the standards committee, regulatory panel and overview and scrutiny co-ordinating committees, together with £300 for their deputies and £200 for members of these bodies;
expenses for arranging for the care of children and dependants while members are on council duty - and travel and subsidence allowances.
