Thirds can't bridge gap

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 10th Dec 2002.

FUSSY refereeing ruined an entertaining game as Melksham 2nds defeated Chippenham 3rds 11-7.

Melksham managed an early breakaway try before the visitors had a try disallowed before half-time, but grabbed the lead thanks to a virtuoso effort from Julian Squires.

Alun Jones ran out of his own dead ball area and fed Squires, who broke the Melksham line and ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts. The conversion was added by Alun Jones.

Melksham then kicked a penalty to regain the lead and slotted another a few minutes later. And despite Chippenham's efforts, they held on.

Team: S Atkin (S Ashman 40 mins), L Hackett, D Williams, M Wheeler, C Mooney, K Jefferies, J Whittaker, N Burroughs (capt), T Murrow (A Jones 40 mins), B Chamberlain, J Squires, M Ottridge, R Clements, P Gould (T Murrow 40 mins).

CHIPPENHAM ran out 22-5 winners over Sutton Benger Nomads, who were playing only their second-ever game.

Chippenham ran in tries from Alun Jones, Jay Whitaker and Ben Chamberlain. The Nomads managed a consolation score.
