Wall deflates Tyres

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 10th Dec 2002.

SWINDON College retained their position at the head of Dorset & Wilts One with a 24-9 win at Cooper-Avon Tyres.

The return of back row John Godsell and front row Hoss Wall was crucial in a game where the two packs were pretty evenly matched.

College suffered an early blow as the Cooper Avon forwards broke from the breakdown to score an early try in the corner.

But quick recycling set up a lineout and a catch and drive move saw the whole pack over the line in style, pack leader Wall touching down.

Further opportunities arose for the league leaders to pile the points on, but chances were squandered.

Cooper Avon stormed back upfield, but were caught by a sucker punch as Brett George ran the length of the pitch, with support from Godsell, for College's second, Greig O'Brien succesfully converting.

But Cooper Avon slotted over one of the many penalties awarded to them to make it 12-8 to the visitors at half-time.

A tap penalty from sub Mark Williams and a pass to flanker Steve Offord allowed College to increase their lead before Greig Evenett was sin-binned.

A Cooper Avon forward joined him minutes later before College's final try, from the base of the breakdown, went to Wall, O'Brien converting.

Squad: Cloete (M. Williams), Bastin (Burdell), Packer, Wills, Evenett, O'Brien (capt), White, Godsell, George, Offord, Green, A. Williams, Wall, Brown (Clarke), Gidzinski.

DEVIZES were outscored three tries to one by Oakmedians as they lost 19-11 in Southern Counties South.

The Saddlebacks could not match the raw pace of the Oakmeadian three-quarters or their forwards ability to recycle the ball quickly, providing attacking options for the current league leaders to set up victory.

From the outset Oakmedians clicked into gear whereas Devizes were slow to respond.

Devizes defence was severely tested, yet they took the lead when Sean O'Sullivan kicked a well-judged 40-metre penalty.

But Oakmedians began to control and a converted try gave them a 7-3 lead.

Within five minutes, Oakmedians scored again after they had pulled Devizes defence across the field for a 12-3 lead.

Devizes got back into the game with an O'Sullivan penalty and then came within one point, when from a lineout close to Oakmedians line, Charlie Rudler went over.

After the break, Oakmedians mounted a series of attacks and eventually exploited weak tackling to score wide out and confirm their victory.

A vice-presidents' day held at the club raised more than £1,000 for mayor Catherine Brown's Multiple Sclerosis appeal.
