From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 29th Oct 2002.
THE UK's leading small firms group, the Federation of Small Businesses has welcomed the Government's latest consultation document on red tape.
Plans for an annual red tape day, under which all new employment laws would be implemented on a set date rather than scattered throughout the year have been outlined.
These could include either one date every six months or on a quarterly basis instead of 10 different days, as was the case in 2000.
The document also proposes an annual government statement alerting businesses to new rules in the pipeline.
Commenting on the announcement the FSB Regional Chairman, Peter Blackburn, said: "While welcoming this consultation document, we are concerned about the practicalities of co-ordinating the UK proposals with Brussels, which now accounts for 40 per cent of all new employment law.
"The document also fails to combat the real source of the problems the high volume of new legislation that bombards small businesses."
