Standing firm for freedom

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Tuesday 29th Oct 2002.

BARRIE Hudson is to be congratulated for writing with such insight and clarity (`A look at life', October 26). He gives a perfect description of the scenario that allows Swindon Council to be incompetent, inefficient and wasteful yet arrogant enough to presume it can stifle freedom of speech.

This country prides itself on giving democracy to the world.

There are, however, many imperfections within our society. This is clearly demonstrated when faceless bureaucrats can hide behind the scenes in government organisations, make huge blunders, then close ranks to ensure their positions are protected and prevent any meaningful investigation into the causes of the problems.

It is unbelievable that in 21st-century Britain, Swindon Council is preventing freedom of speech. It must not be allowed to happen.
