Floral displays are bloomin' marvellous

GARDENING enthusiasts set Bradford on Avon ablaze with colour last month as part of the annual Bradford in Bloom competition.

The town council team swung into action last week and set about judging the domestic and commercial entries.

There were so many entries it took judges Colin Henwood and David Tucker an entire day to walk round the town and make their final decision, but the clear winner with Best Overall Garden, Best Hidden Garden and Best Front Garden was Mr Neville Day, of Southville Close.

Dorothy House won Best Shop Window with their original Feng Shui design. Commercial judge Martin Hucker said the display showed ingenuity and originality.

The hanging baskets outside The Dandy Lion and The Bunch of Grapes illustrated the spirit of the contest with their attractive floral displays, while the Avon Bowling Club brightened up its green with individual tubs full of floral colour.

The Lock Inn Cottage won the Best Street Scene award and the Frome Road and Canal Bridge area was transformed into a mass of colour full of hanging baskets and floral displays.

Cllr Rosemary Brown, who organised the competition, said: "I am delighted that so many people have taken the time and trouble to enter the competition."

Winners will be invited to a prize-giving ceremony on September 3 at Holy Trinity Church hall.
