Album on music prize shortlist

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 3rd Aug 2001.

SINGER Susheela Raman has received the best birthday presents possible after hearing her debut album has been shortlisted for a top music industry prize.

The Bradford on Avon-based artist, who turned 28 last week, heard her album Salt Rain was one of 12 shortlisted for the 2001 Technics Mercury Music Prize last Tuesday.

The competition for the prestigious prize, which is judged in September, includes top artists Radiohead, Basement Jaxx, PJ Harvey and Super Furry Animals.

Miss Raman said she was delighted and the nomination was a great boost to her career.

She said: "It is very exciting. I had a few days of mayhem and everyone has been calling.

"We knew the album had been put forward but it was only after the shortlist was announced that we knew what had happened."

The album was the culmination of three years work with Bradford on Avon producer and guitarist Sam Mills.

Judging is purely based on the music and the final winner will be decided on the night of the Mercury Show.
