Rate relief for hard-hit firms

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Thursday 19th Jul 2001.

SALISBURY and the New Forest have been named on a list of local authorities eligible to receive extra help from the government to give rate relief to businesses affected by foot-and-mouth disease.

Government is contributing 95 per cent of the cost of rate rebates for small businesses 98 per cent where the cost to councils is eight per cent of its annual budget or more.

Small businesses, which have suffered hardship as a result of the foot-and-mouth outbreak, can claim 100 per cent rate relief to be granted at the discretion of the local authority.
