Police pledge tough line on town's louts

From the Amesbury Journal, first published Thursday 19th Jul 2001.

POLICE in Amesbury are to adopt a policy of zero tolerance in a bid to rid the town of loutish behaviour.

The public are also being urged to play their part by keeping officers informed of antisocial gatherings and by reporting all crime, no matter how small.

An emergency meeting between town and district councillors and Amesbury police also discussed the need for improved facilities to cater for the growing number of youths in the area.

The meeting followed a spate of incidents in recent weeks involving vandalism, abuse and general intimidation - often fuelled by under-age drinking.

Head of policing in Amesbury, Inspector Tim Richards, has ordered patrols to clamp down on incidents in which youths are caught drinking, damaging property or worrying residents.

He sees this as the `quick fix' but recognises that more needs to be done long-term to provide the 15- to 18-year-old age group particularly with worthwhile distractions.
