New school's numbers swell

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Thursday 19th Jul 2001.

CALNE'S new primary school is expected to open its doors in September to more than twice the amount of pupils anticipated.

Fynamore School, near Beversbrook Road, Calne, will be officially opened on October 4 in a ceremony conducted by the Bishop of Ramsbury Peter Hullah, and with guests including Calne Mayor Chris Hughes.

Carolyn Maddox, the new headteacher, said she has appointed all her staff and expects the school to welcome more than 100 pupils.

"From the amount of phone calls we have had recently I think the number will be over 100, we have 95 registered pupils at the moment," said Mrs Maddox, who is currently putting together final preparations at county hall in Trowbridge.

Mrs Maddox, 45, said an extra class has been added to cope with demand and she expects to appoint another teacher after Christmas.

"More houses have been opened on the new estate and we have had a lot of inquiries from parents," added Mrs Maddox, who was head teacher of Speen Hamland School in Newbury, which has 300 pupils.

Mrs Maddox said her deputy head teacher would be Dale Burr, a 29-year-old Australian, who is a senior teacher at Brookfield primary school in Swindon.

Three other members of staff have also been appointed and Mrs Maddox said she would be taking some Key Stage One classes herself.
