Cash for walk to school plans

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 23rd Mar 2001.

Schools in Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge and Melksham have won cash to help encourage children to walk to school.

They will each get a share of the government's £99,000 Safe Routes To School allowance.

The successful bidders are: Christ Church primary, Bradford on Avon, which intends to spend £5,000 on a shelter for pedestrians waiting to collect their children. It is hoped this will help to encourage parents to walk or at least park away from the premises; Grove Primary, Trowbridge, £5,000 for a new cyclist/pedestrian entrance and pathway with new cycle stands and lockers; George Ward, Melksham, £8,000 to renovate cycle sheds and stands. The school is committed to a school travel plan and has conducted a safe routes to school survey; Clarendon, Trowbridge, £7,000 for secure cycle racks and lockers, and for the enhancement of cycleways to Bradley Road and College Road which are part of the Trowbridge cycle network.

Applications for cash were made by 44 schools in the county and councillors will next week be asked to give grants to 13. All 13 schools will also receive £100 to support their involvement in a county Travel Plan.
