Drivers `ignore' pelican crossing

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 23rd Mar 2001.

DRIVERS have been ignoring a new pelican crossing after the lights were switched on this week, according to the man who was first on the scene when a pensioner died on Trowbridge Road, Bradford on Avon, two years ago.

The crossing is at the Trowbridge Road entrance to Fitzmaurice Primary School.

Postmaster Bill Sherman, the first person at the accident scene when pensioner Leslie Carter died, said: "The lights are up and running, and it is good the crossing has been installed, but at the moment, motorists are going straight through. Old habits die hard."

Campaigners Kay Berryman and Wendy Tripp celebrated the completion of the crossing this week.

The pair collected more than 520 names on a petition calling for a light-controlled crossing near the spot where Mr Carter died.

Mrs Berryman said: "I am delighted with the crossing, but it is a shame that someone had to die to get something done."

Mr Carter, 84, was killed instantly in January 1999 when he was hit by a car as he crossed the Trowbridge Road, a short distance from his Regents Place home.

At the time, Mrs Berryman said the road had always been dangerous and posed a terrible problem for the elderly and young children.
