Eagles swoops to carry off sweepstake win

CARP and roach made up the weights in the Wilts Angling sweepstake at Ravenscroft Lake on Sunday.

Fred Eagles, of Devizes, won with a mixed catch of carp and perch weighing 23lb 14oz, taken alternating with pole fished red maggots on 18 hook and sweetcorn on a 14 hook. Paul Cooper, of Melksham, was second with a mixed catch of carp and roach weighing 16lb 8oz, taken on pole fished sweetcorn on a 14 hook.

He was followed by Barry Oakford, of Bradford, with an all roach catch weighing 11lb 8oz taken on pole fished pinkies on a 22 hook.

Other placings: 4 John Greenwood, Trowbridge, 11lb 0oz; 5 Mick Gunning, Trowbridge, 10lb 4oz; 6 Richard Hawkins, Trowbridge, 9lb 11oz.

The Kennet and Avon Teams of Four event was fished on Sunday on the between Woodborough and Ladybridge.

Devizes Yellow took the team prize, with 61 points, followed by Thunderbirds, with 58, and Oxford AC, with 55.

Individual honours went to Netheravon matchman Brian Shutler, with a tench, skimmer and roach catch weighing 6lb 13oz taken on pole fished chopped worm on an 18 hook.

Runner-up was Mark Howes, of Devizes Talisman, with a mixed bag of skimmers and roach weighing 6lb 6oz 8dm taken on pole fished pinkies on a 22 hook. Similar tactics gave third prize to Steve Trimby, of Swindon, with a tench, skimmer and roach catch weighing 6lb 3oz 8dm.

Other placings: 4 Kevin Rowles, Devizes, 5lb 7oz; 5 Richard Trim, Pewsey, 5lb 2oz; 6 Ian Didcot, Gloucester, 4lb 9oz 8dm.

The final match in the Devizes evening series was fished on Wednesday on the Kennet and Avon Canal at London Road.

Kevin Rowles, of Devizes, finished the series in style with a winning catch of tench, skimmers and roach weighing 8lb 6oz to take the overall prize with a total of 42 points.

Runner-up was Brian Shutler, of Netheravon, with a tench and skimmer catch weighing 5lb taken on pole fished chopped worm on an 18 hook. He was followed by Dave Cannings, of Melksham, with an all roach catch weighing 4lb 10oz taken on pole fished casters on a 20 hook.

Other placings 4 Alan Brown, Swindon, 3lb 14oz; 5 Andy Jones, Devizes, 3lb 6oz; 6 Gary Williamson, Devizes, 2lb 8oz.

There were some good weights in last week's inter club event between Devizes, Calne, Chippenham and Avon fished on the Kennet and Avon Canal at Seend.

Elick Payne, of Calne, gained a comfortable win with an all carp catch weighing 21lb 3oz 8dm, taken on pole fished chopped worm on an 18 hook. Brian Warden, of Avon, was second with a mixed catch of carp and skimmers weighing 13lb 1oz, taken on pole fished sweetcorn on a 14 hook. Third was Alan Pratt, of Chippenham, with another carp and skimmer catch weighing 10lb 4oz taken on pole fished chopped worm on an 18 hook.

Other placings: 4 Kevin Boltz, Avon, 7lb 5oz; 5 Alan Brown, Devizes, 6lb 13oz 8dm; 6 Vic Abbott, Avon, 6lb 5oz.

Despite the bright sunny conditions, boat anglers have enjoyed excellent sport on Chew with many limit bags of top condition fish taken on dries and nymphs in the Dam Basin. The more adventurous anglers are still finding fish all over the lake.

At Blagdon sport is now at its best with dries and static nymphs the most successful methods. At all lakes mornings are providing the best sport from the banks, but weed growth is restricting some bank fishing at Blagdon.

At the Barrows good sport is being found on the inlet of number three and on number two, with several limit bags taken.

Chew produced a total catch of 823 fish averaging 2lb 8oz last week, with the heaviest brown weighing 3lb 2oz and rainbow 5lb 4oz. At Blagdon 351 fish averaging 2lb 8oz were taken, topped by a brown of 4lb and rainbow 4lb 12oz. The barrows yielded 102 fish averaging 2lb, topped by a brown of 4lb and rainbow 4lb 2oz.

Sport was more difficult on the Wessex Water trout fisheries last week, with fish staying deeper in the hot sunshine. Clatworthy produced a total catch of 211 trout, caught mainly on sinking lines with lures such as damsel nymphs and montanas.

There were reasonable catches in the Wilts Angling open match on Tuesday at Shearwater.

Terry Bruton, of Stoke St Michael, chalked up another win with an all bream catch weighing 24lb 4oz, taken on feeder fished sweetcorn on a 14 hook. Paul Bond, of Warminster, was second with an all carp catch weighing 23lb 4oz, taken on waggler fished pellet on a 14 hook. He was followed by Lee Woodhouse, of Salisbury, with a mixed catch of carp, bream and roach weighing 22lb 6oz, taken alternating with waggler fished red maggots and pole fished sweetcorn on a 16 hook.

Other placings: 4 Dave Bruton, Stoke St Michael, 16lb 15oz; 5 Howard Carpenter, Trowbridge, 16lb 14oz; 6 Andy Pritchard, Frome, 10lb 8oz.

Roach fed well in the Chippenham match on the Avon at Chippenham on Saturday.

Robin Guy, of Melksham, won with an all roach catch weighing 12lb 7oz, taken on pole fished casters on an 18 hook. Mark Wooldridge, of Chippenham, was a close runner-up with another roach catch weighing 11lb 13oz, taken on pole fished bronze maggots on a 20 hook. Steve Palmer, of Chippenham, was third with yet another roach catch weighing 10lb 14oz, taken on pole fished hemp on an 18 hook.

Other placings: 4 Adie Reeves, Chippenham, 8lb 7oz; 5 Brian Duffield, Chippenham, 4lb 6oz 8dm; 6 Stuart White, Chippenham, 4lb.

There were good weights in the inter-club event between Airsprung, Warminster and Blue Circle at Blue Circle lakes on Saturday.

Richard Penn, of Warminster, won with a mixed catch of carp and roach weighing 26lb 6oz, taken alternating with waggler and feeder fished red maggots on an 18 hook. John Greenwood, of Trowbridge, was second with an all carp catch weighing 15lb 3oz, taken on feeder fished red maggots on an 18 hook. Mike Withey, of Westbury, was third with a mixed catch of carp and roach weighing 12lb 9oz, taken on feeder and pole fished red maggots and sweetcorn on 14 and 18 hooks.

Other placings: 4 Andy Hitchkin, Warminster, 11lb 5oz; 5 Dave Foster, Semington, 7lb 10oz; 6 Mike Steel, Trowbridge, 7lb 9oz.

Weights were fairly even in the Bradford match on Sunday on the Kennet and Avon Canal at the Kings Arms Bradford.

Howard Carpenter, of Trowbridge, won with a mixed catch of tench and skimmers weighing 6lb 1oz, taken on pole fished red maggot on a 20 hook. Neil Hounsell, of Trowbridge, was second with another tench and skimmer catch weighing 5lb 11oz taken on pole fished pinkies on a 22 hook, over squats. Similar tactics gave third prize to Vic Abbott, of Melksham, with a tench and skimmer catch weighing 5lb 4oz.

Other placings: 4 Dave Foster, Semington, 4lb 11oz; 5 Mike Withey, Westbury, 4lb 5oz; 6 Pete Neate, Whitley 3lb.

There were some fine weights in the Airsprung match at Pugnalls Farm on Sunday when carp fed well.

Ian Stainer, of Bradford, won with a mixed bag of carp and tench weighing 43lb 8oz, taken on pole with sweet corn and bread flake on a 14 hook. Runner-up was Dean Bird, of Bradford, with an all carp catch weighing 34lb 7oz, taken on pole fished luncheon meat on a 12 hook.

Steve Southern, of Trowbridge, was third with another carp catch weighing 30lb 2oz taken on pole fished red maggots on an 18 hook.

Other placings: 4 Martin Hinton, Trowbridge, 28lb 3oz; 5 Chris Oliver, Bradford, 22lb 10oz; 6 Barry Brooks, Trowbridge, 19lb 8oz.
