Waste disposal under review

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 4th Aug 2000.

A REVIEW of rubbish disposal and recycling across West Wiltshire could lead to a change in the way they are handled.

District council chiefs have accepted 18 recommendations on how to improve the service. These are due to be put in place during the next 12 months.

Currently, collections of rubbish are made every week at nearly 50,000 houses. There are also about 100 recycling sites across West Wiltshire, and newspapers and magazines are collected from outside houses in Trowbridge.

The council also provides a bulk waste collection service and community skips.

One aim of the review is to help reduce the amount of waste taken to landfill sites.

West Wiltshire District Council also has to meet national recycling targets.

Council officers are looking at ways of streamlining waste collection. These could include alternating the weekly collection of household waste with compost items using wheeled bins. The community skip service could be replaced with household waste recycling centres. Another plan is to expand the collection of newspapers and magazines to other towns.

In the long term, the district council hopes to introduce other so-called kerbside recycling schemes for dry recyclable materials.

Will Godfrey, the council's best value officer, said: Much of our service is too expensive or non-sustainable and we have identified alternatives.
