Yabba dabba don't bother

From the Swindon Advertiser, first published Friday 4th Aug 2000.

Bad ideas of the last few years Kevin Keegan playing a flat back four in Euro 2000; building a big tent type thing by the Thames at Greenwich; and making a follow up to the dreadful 1994 film The Flintstones.

The Flintstones In Viva Rock Vegas (PG) is a prequel rather than a sequel, featuring a young Fred Flintstone (Mark Addy) and best pal Barney Rubble (Stephen Baldwin) and the courtship of their wives to be Wilma and Betty (Kristen Third Rock From The Sun Johnson and Jane Ally McBeal Krakowski).

The attempt to make a movie from the hugely popular TV cartoon series backfired badly six years ago, so why another has been produced is baffling.

British actor Addy the fat one from The Full Monty works hard at getting Fred's voice as near perfect as possible, and the female leads are appealing.

But they are let down by a poor script and heavy-handed direction.

Not even the appearance of Joan Collins as Wilma's snooty mother can save the day.

A waste of time and a lot of money. Rating: 3 out of 10
